New Years Resolutions
I come before you today with a humble heart. This is a new year, 2010, and we have nothing more wonderful to look forward to than the future itself. Some persons are sitting down thinking about what he or she wants to happen in their life this year, some don't care and are going to continue doing what they were doing last year, and some are working to turn their dreams and thoughts into reality. It is our responsibility as a people to enhance our lives through knowledge and understanding of the world, figure out how we can achieve success in life, and execute all our plans to maximise our wealth. Wealth and success are way more than just the riches we acquire while here on this earth; wealth extends to the family and the friends in our lives and what we do with them. Success extends to what we do, why we do it, what we have accomplished through doing it, and the difference we have made in other people's lives because we are doing it. We have one life to live on this Earth and every bit of what we do now counts, therefore we must cherish the moments we have here and do as much with our lives as physically possible.
New Year's Resolutions..
The beginning of any year is usually a good time of the year to make changes in your life. I believe this because a year is the biggest cycle in your life; we have days, weeks, months, and YEARS. So if we make a change for this "cycle" then it can have meaning, it can be powerful, and it can make a significant difference in us for the year. Another thing about this time of the year that makes it an interesting time to try and make a change within our lives is the fact that many people are thinking about making changes within their lives, some are actually putting into effect the necessary changes they need to make within their lives, and there is plenty of positive energy floating around as a result of that. This makes new year's resolutions very effective in making a change within your life.
Sometimes it is hard to make a change..
Nobody ever suggested that change would be easy. In fact, it's a little sweeter and even more effective because it may not be easy. The process of working to change our habits works from the inside out as we consciously work daily to make that change. By committing ourselves to making a change we have already planted a seed inside of us that can act as a driving force to help us accomplish the task at hand. It doesn't mean that commitment alone is going to be the deciding factor as to whether we make that change; the rest is up to us. We have to fight day in and day out to make it happen.
The longest journey starts with a single step..
Life is often described as a journey and with good reason. Nobody gets anywhere without making an initial step, not necessarily big steps but baby steps. Every step counts when we are trying to make a change, but the first step always seems to be the hardest. Moving past the first step and continuing with full strides towards change is the goal. Set your goal, make it, and celebrate your victory. We all deserve to celebrate sometimes and officially making a change in your life that you wanted to make is a real cause for a celebration.
They say only 3% of people write down their new year's resolutions..
Statistics don't mean anything unless you understand how they relate to something of importance. If you do your research on the amount of people who set new year's resolutions and actually make that change you will find a percentage even smaller than three. In my own research I have found it to be much closer to 1% of people who set these resolutions who actually succeed with those changes. I am going to make a stretch here and say that I believe there is an indirect correlation to writing down your new year's resolutions and making the successful changes. I have always believed there to be an almost supernatural power in writing. If you write it, it will come to pass.
My Personal New Year's Resolutions
Below I am going to publicly declare my new year's resolutions:
1. Continue to progressively work on a better me.
This is my ultimate resolution because it underlies all my other new year's resolutions. I believe that we never stop growing; even though we stop growing physically we never in fact stop growing mentally. This means that we can continuously better ourselves as time goes on.
2. Continue to drink more water.
Going into 2009 I set a goal to drink more water. I actually strongly dislike water (it has no taste!) but due to the fact that water is an essential resource in life I had decided, after 21 years of living, I needed to consume more. I had always been athletic and drank water after doing sports, but I always had trouble trying to drink an entire glass. In 2009 I realized that I can drink room temperature water without a problem and it actually tastes good, so I intend to continue for the new year 2010.
3. Work to continue breaking down my vices (i.e Stop/Cut-back drinking).
Some time last year I quit smoking and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. I enjoy drinking alcohol as much as I enjoyed smoking but I don't want you to think that I am an alcoholic of any kind. I don't drink daily and I never drink alone. I am what you would probably call a "social drinker". When I go to parties or social events where drinking alcohol is permitted it would be more out of the ordinary to see me without a drink than to see me with two in my hands at the same time. A lot of people will say that there is nothing wrong with drinking alcohol and I don't disagree because I believe everything has its place within a balance. I am just on a path to better myself and a part of doing that is breaking down the things I believe I have made habits that aren't natural. So I intend to continue along this path and cut back on the drinking.
4. Press hard to successfully execute all my plans and achieve success in all my endeavours.
What we are passionate about and the things that matter to us the most should be high up on our list of priorities. For me it is a matter of making my plans, ideas and dreams a priority. Ensuring that I execute all of them within a timely fashion and give it my all are things that are very important to me. Success in my eyes is measured by how many people's lives I positively impact by the actions that I make.
This 2010 feels like it could shape up to be a great year and I personally believe many great things are going to happen this year, I only hope we (myself included) can be a part of making that happen.
To Your Success,
- Alexander Day
